The spammers don't read the posts at all. They simply figured out it would be more productive (aka less detection rate by newbie bloggers) to hand write multiple ambiguous phrases than to use generated text that could easily be spotted by a human (most). They still use the same automated systems that send the mangled garbage to do it, they are just plugging better information into the system. Great example of SPAM "keeping up with the times"

Getting comments and getting more comments is always good for blogs, but RELEVANT comments from genuine commentators add credibility. To me, getting suspicious comments from possible spammers is like a slap to the face to your blog/website since you can't get more genuine people commenting on your material. I find certain suspicious blog hits from people searching things like the following when I view my FEEDJIT Live Traffic Feed:

"(keyword) blog comments powered by disqus""add new comment disqus (keyword)""(keyword) powered by disqus"

DISQUS is a great service regardless. Trouble is, you may actually exasperate your spam comment problems rather than completely treat them. Almost have to take better command of posted comments if DISQUS spam gets to be a problem (like requiring only Registered users as opposed to anonymous commentators).

I have no problem with people posting comments with links, as long as they're relevant to the discussion. Someone posting a link to cell phones on a blog post about sports or something isn't relevant, it's spam.

What you call spam can also be called a reference. Visitors add value to your blog by adding content with their comments, so they are entitle to leave a reference. Disqus is a wonderful tool because it creates interaction and it is building a community of commentators.

Disqus may be able to answer that one. Many of the blogs I follow use Disqus, which was one of the factors I considered when deciding to use it.

Sure, but only if the comment is worth having. Also if you look at someone's Disqus profile and they've left the exact same comment on lots of different sites, chances are it's not a real comment.

I have a question for you: what happens if a "spam comment" lands on your site? As long as the comment is on topic and that user generates content on your blog, maybe he is entitled to leave a link as well:)) Of course, I'm speaking about on topic comments only. Have you ever thought that the person behind the link might actually be interested in that topic? Guess not...
